Amazing Crochet Articles

In Friemersheim local resident Bettie Roelfse is well-known for her unique plastic bag crafted items. Now retired, her hands are always busy and she loves crocheting functional items from ordinary shopping bags. Spar, Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite, Clicks (and various other bags) … one can actually spot the corporate colours in the articles produced by her.

Bettie’s best-selling range is her upcycled plastic hats – all-weather and beautiful through rain and sun. Some have even been bought by shops to dress their display mannequins placed outdoors. Her door mats and bathroom mats can be seen in many homes in Friemersheim and she also creates a variety of bags, big and small. Her canary yellow “pille sakkie” is roomy enough to house all necessary medicines, and so bright that it serves as a constant reminder of the daily dose!

Plastic bags were always available … she used to enjoy crocheting … so Bettie started to experiment and perfected her technique. She does not use patterns but creates as she goes along – making each article unique.

Contact Bettie via Cinty Joubert at the Friemersheim Sewing Group (073 455 7346) if you would like to look at her products, have something made, or want to contribute to recycling by donating plastic bags to her.
