It is by chance that we came across this energetic group of community members at the Wolwedans Community Centre as pictured on the front page, busy dancing on the sound track of Jabulani.
WOW, which stands for Western Cape on Wellness was launched on the 4th of October in this area, with the aim of creating a culture of wellness together. The group is led by Zukie Runu, a professional nurse original from Port Elizabeth and trained in community orientated primary care. The focus is on enhancing better eating habits and exercise to become a healthier you.
Community health workers are part of this group and are the eyes and ears of Sister Runu, identifying the need for home visits for the elderly and the sick, who find it difficult to get to the satellite clinic at the community centre. After hours services up until 18:00 is also available to advise on Child & Family Planning, wound dressings, pap smears and food intake for patients on chronic medication.
Any community member is welcome to join this group and on a last Wednesday of each month a physiotherapist provides expert advice on how to manage back related pains. Contact them at the clinic at the Wolwedans Community Centre for more details.
