Nubee – learner’s and driver’s licences
On 7 and 8 March 2022, the Southern Africa Foundation Youth Café in Great Brak River hosted the team from Nubee, a startup company from Cape Town that aims to help youth have better access to acquiring their learner’s licences and ultimately their driver’s licences, and the job opportunities that can flow from that.
There was plenty of interest in the sessions and more than 70 youths completed the 2-day course. The Great Brak Secondary School Grade 12 learners and teachers’ assistants were included as we facilitated the program at the high school. We believe this will set up the Grade 12’s very well, to access many more career opportunities once the year ends and they enter the workforce.
These sessions concluded with a mock learner’s test. Funding permitting, we will hopefully work with Nubee again to facilitate more virtual classes over the coming weeks and months, after which they will assist learners with appointments for their learner’s licences. Then the process begins anew for driver’s licences. Nubee has also partnered with Vuma that connects people with driver’s licences to job opportunities, such as delivery drivers, take out drivers, taxi’s etc.
From 28 March to 1 April the Youth Café partnered with numerous service providers and sponsors in our beautiful village to run our first holiday program since the advent of the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020.
Activities such as Self-defense training, Life Skills, Safety at Schools, Sport, DJ classes, a big team building and teamwork day, as well as a Career Expo were at the order of the day. We had some amazing attendance from youth from all over Great Brak.
Great relationships were built, memories were made and a lot of young lives impacted throughout the week. We are also very thankful to all our sponsors and partners who made the week a possibility.
