DIE KREATIEWE PROSES

Tydens die aanvoorwerk vir die Musefees, het dit my weereens opgeval hoe omvattend die kreatiewe prosesse is wat lei tot die skep van ’n kunswerk. In die lig hiervan is ’n paar kunstenaars genader om ons ’n kykie in hul kreatiewe prosesse te gee – op sigself inspirerend!

SHEENA RIDLEY, SCULPTOR AND ARTIST

Sculptures in public places send powerful messages to the viewers, and I am very happy to have been asked to lend the sculptures depicted here, called Encompassment, to the Mossel Bay Municipality. These three sculptural figures depict family and people’s unity, a circle of strength and protection. The embracing energies flow from one form to the other, binding them together. I feel that this was what the Joint Operation Centre in Mossel Bay is inviting, and what we would all like to be happening in our family and our public circles. The medium of steel and cement is well suited to this depiction, being quite organic in feel, with strength and durability. I work in other mediums too, sculpting in clay, wax or plaster to cast finally in bronze. I also paint in oils and work with chalk pastels.

PETRA BRITS, KUNSTENAAR

Birth originated while visiting Kagga Kamma in the Ceres mountain area, Western Cape. Serenity and stillness cloaked me and ignited my creative spirit … ideas emerging in my mind’s eye. In the quietness I could hear God’s whispers on the slight breeze, the veld bursting into a song of praise with its expanses of flowers, shrubs, stones, rocks, textures and colour tones. With the warmth of the sun embracing the landscape, Birth was inspired by the coloured layers in a rock. Normally birth is associated with childbirth, pain and fluids, and action. What I am trying to portray in this painting is the silence, the tension, the split second before the last push, the flowing of water, which represents the ebb and flow of life, the cleansing and purifying to start anew, the bursting forth of a new life!

MARINA SCHOLTEMEIJER, BEELDHOUER

Waarom beeldhouwerk? Ek het ’n groot liefde vir lig en skadu, diepte en drie dimensies eerder as kleur en plat vlakke. Ek probeer beelde skep wat die toeskouer nooi om rondom hulle te stap. Die meeste van my beelde se mooiste aansig is die agterkant of profiel, eerder as vooraansig, en ek probeer gereeld my kliënte oortuig om nie die beelde teen ’n muur te laat staan nie, maar eerder só te plaas dat ’n mens al die aansigte kan sien en die emosie van die beeld kan ervaar. Die styl kan beskryf word as vereenvoudigde, figuratiewe beelde, uit veselsement en staal. Eenvoud en sterk lyne wat ’n spesifieke emosie vasvang, is belangriker as detail. Die emosie word in die beeld se houding vasgevang, nie in gesigsuitdrukkings nie, en daarom het die figure nie werklik gesigte nie. Elke beeld het simboliese betekenis, waarvan ’n skimp in die beeld se titel te vinde is. ’n Gevoel van kalmte en refleksie oorheers eerder as beweging en aksie.
