CELEBRATING OUR YOUTH
In June we celebrated our youth, and this year we had the incredible privilege of hosting the second annual Provincial Youth Expo in our area. The event was held on 16 June 2023 at the George City Hall, with Youth Café’s, NGO’s and government departments (including the Minister of Social Development and Mayor of George) coming together to celebrate our youth, and showcase the amazing opportunities there are for youth in our area and province. Youth from all over the Southern Cape had the opportunity to attend the event with free transport arranged. It was wonderful to see so many stakeholders gathered together to make this event a success, and to show our youth that there is hope for the future.
Closer to home, the Youth Cafe intern team also wrote and performed the play Agter toe Deure, which focuses on the everyday struggles youth are exposed to in their ultimate place of safety, their homes. It addresses domestic abuse, addiction/substance abuse, peer pressure and the decisions youth face on a daily basis, amid their external and internal struggles. What gives the play extra punch, is that it is accompanied by music written, composed and performed by Jon Evertse, Yolyn Fortuin and other members of the Youth Café team. Being performed by youth from our community, it really resonates deeply with young and old.
The play has found great acclaim from religious gatherings, schools, community workshops etc. We invite you to come and watch our next showing, be it at your local school, church or community event.
As always, we also sincerely invite anyone from our community to come and enjoy a coffee with us and see what we are up to, and where you can be involved.
