YOUTH MONTH

The Great Brak River Youth Café celebrated Youth Month during June, and with that hosted many great events to celebrate the Youth in our community. The theme for Youth Month this year was Youth Arise, and arise they did – from our very own intern group that has grown from strength to strength this year, to youth in our community that made their voices heard and took up the space that was there for them.

We had a poetry competition, we celebrated Youth Day with an event on the 15th of June and had a colour run for our community. Our Youth Day event, usually one of the flagship events of our year, commemorates the Soweto Uprising of 1976, and the role youth played on that fateful day. It included musical items, youth testimonies, stage performances and youth debates.

Please read and enjoy the lyrics to a song written and performed by one of the youth in our community, Waltim Jansen, a.k.a Walla-G, named “Staan Op”:

“Ek sien net krake in die mure;

As ek dink aan al die ure

Wat die mense

Swaarkry

Dit kon aners gewees het

As ons kon gekies het

Maar die lewe

Het sy eie way

En kom laat ons praat

En kom laat ons praat

En kom laat ons praat

Oor wat ons kan doen

Want die situasie, breek ons nasie

Staan, staan op

Maak ’n verskil vandag; Maak ’n verskil vandag

In die strate
