ANTON SMIT SCULPTURES IN GREAT BRAK RIVER

8 December 2021 was a memorable day for art lovers in the Garden Route. After months of planning as part of a tourism initiative for Great Brak River, eight works by world-renowned sculptor, Anton Smit, were erected in this picturesque town as part of a new art route. The project was initiated and managed by locals Laurinda Smit and Heleen Coertze. Kundai Zinyengere and five assistants from Cape Town installed the sculptures.

With the Great Brak River and ocean as the backdrop, four of these sculptures –  Crouching Man, In Moment – Series V, In Moment – Series II and Die Verlange  – can be viewed in Morrison Road, opposite the Transkaroo and Opispoor restaurants. Another three sculptures – Agape – Effervescent Series – were installed in Long Street opposite Peperboom restaurant. Just down the road Facets 11 – Bark can be viewed at Art@39Long. These sculptures will remain in Great Brak River for at least three years. Adding sculptures during 2022 to expand the current art route is in the pipeline.

Anton Smit’s works form part of public and private collections throughout South Africa and internationally. To be able to exhibit his unique work here is an enormous privilege and of immeasurable value to the area, its people and visitors. The sculptures represent hope, communication and involvement with the viewer, and proves without a doubt that nothing is impossible when a community stands together to make a dream come true. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

Please contact Heleen Coertze on 082 457 7897 for any enquiries about the sculptures.
